So hi, my mother is a child of an Adkins man and his mistress. My mom was then adopted out, we think, due to needing a cleft lip surgery in the 1950's (and a single bio mom was not able to afford that). In learning the full story of her bio parents, I fixated and did a deep dive on the Adkins. One of the only things the bio mom said of the Adkins man she had two kids by was that he was 'mixed indigenous' and she gave those two children (two out of 5 total, 3 from previous marriage) fake surnames to pay homage to their father while not revealing his identity. So if you all see the surname 'Allred/Alred' come up sometime in the future, this is why.

So in my fixation with figuring some things out I was reading over this blog and more. Reading over what was going on in Ohio/west virginia/virginia and why everything is so very very confusing.

In all the history of OH/VA/WVA there have been many shady things to shift or break our knowledge base. Marriage segregation acts in Virginia muddled everything the heck up. VA also destroyed records of indigenous peoples to erase them from VA to make the state 'native free' so to speak (a failure of course, but propaganda is powerful). Ohio did similar only they pointed their finger guns at the indigenous population that did not want to leave and went "you are now white" on paper, causing more erasure. The 'native free' propaganda, re-writing of records, and the cultural erasure sure does suck in trying to figure out and round out one's understanding of their origins. Its not just the old histories that are making things harder I guess is my point.

I'm not sure I will really KNOW the answers to much of this stuff because of the crazy amount of effort society has put into oppressing others. It is deeply unfortunate. I do appreciate the Adkins family doing their best to sort it out and the indigenous family members providing insight where possible.

And you never know, perhaps random new information may one day pop up to shed some light on the issue of who is connected to who. Similarly, you never know how many random kids/people are out there from this family line. Me and my family ... case in point.
