Kay,

I wished we were cousins, as I can visit with you about the many mis-
published accounts I have found.

Anyways, about the Y-DNA.

You are quite correct, when you wrote that this could only be transferred from
father to son, and on down through each generation as long as each has
a natural born son.

Now then a must know, Y-DNA can mutate between father and son, but
cannot change in haplogroup such a I1 to R1.

Now this is what the Montgomery familytreedna project site reflects.

James Montgomery of Caswell County has been tested, and it has been
found to be that of the I1 haplogroup. If memory serves me this was the
father/son line that has two test on the site.

Then there was the William Montgomery whom was in the Rev War from
Amherst County. He is the same that is claimed as being married to his
cousin Betsy Montgomery: daughter; of William Sr. and Jane his wife.
This William of the Rev War was the son of John and Martha Miller Montgomery of Amherst County. This Rev War William Montgomery has
descendants that have been tested and their haplgroup reflects an I1.

But, then there was the son of this John and Martha Miller Montgomery
by the name of Nathan Montgomery.
This Nathan Montogmery came from Amherst County into Kentucky about
1789, and finally settled on the Virginia Land Warrant that his father: John
Montgomery had taken out in 1781. Most of this land is located near Silver
Creek and Paint Creek which is near the communtiy of Richmond Kentucky.
But, there is a piece near the Green River and some in the area of where
Adair County is at present day.
A descendant of this Nathan Montgomery removed to Illinois and died there
in 1848, and it was his descendant that has been tested and the result of
his Y-DNA test show R1B1 haplogroup.

So, there in lies the question.

All best

Mike
