I feel I must write what I know of the family of William Montgomery Sr. and
Jane his wife.
This William Montgomery died in march 1780 due to an indian attack on
his home station on Carpenters Creek branch of Green River in
Kentucky County, Virginia. William’s son, John Montgomery and infant
child were also killed this same attack. When the attack was over and the
prisoner accounted for, there was one girl child named Flora Russell of
about 12 years. It was this Flora Russel that was killed when the rescuer’s
came into sight. She is said to have said to her mother “there comes
Uncle Ben” then she was tomahawked to death.
It was said by Mark Twain that his grandmother Jane Montgomery Casey
said that she had lost five family members due to the Indians.
So, In March 1780 Jane Montgomery lost four family members.
I searched for five more years to find the record that said that
Alexander Montgomery, son of William Sr. and Jane was the “fifth”
family member to have died at the hands of the Indians.
It is the Frontiersmen by Ekert, and in the Draper Manuscripts.
