Comment on Alexander Montgomery 1740-1840 by Suzanne A

Hi Kay and Mike. I’m a newcomer to Montgomery genealogy so it’s been hard for me to get on track here. I’m a descendant of Alexander Montgomery who applied in 1828 for a Rev. War pension based on his enlistment in 1777 in Washington Co.VA in Cpt. Read”s company of Columbia Buford’s regiment. That application says Alex. M. fought in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. That took place in South Carolina in 1781 probably close to the time Alex. received his discharge. The reference then in the pension file must be to Monmouth SC, not Monmouth NJ.

Also re DAR, I’m not a member but I have done some volunteer work for them and I do research there at times. They freely acknowledge that some of their early genealogy work has been incorrect. For some time with each new membership application, they have vetted the ancestral line from scratch and have closed lines of membership were the research is not supported (altho they do not kick out living members). If you look in the GRS section of their new website, you will see comments in red where an “Ancestor”s” service or the lineage is questioned or the line is closed. Sons of American Revolution has the same problems. Much early genealogy of all sorts can be wrong at one level or another because access to primary sources was not what we are blessed with today and because family lore was often unquestioned in earlier times. Also in the rage to discover royal roots and ancestors of distinction in this country in years 1890 -1940, fraudulent family histories were sometimes sold to unsuspecting individuals.

I’m grateful for what I’ve learned on this blog. I’ll keep learning and reading and maybe contribute to the dna file. Thanks.
