Comment on Alexander Montgomery 1740-1840 by Mike Shuman

Hi Kay, It has been a long time since I was last here. I have more information about Alexander Montgomery of Logan Co. KY. He carries a y-DNA of J2. He tells in the year of 1815 and in the court of Logan County that he had lived here for 21 years. RECORDS have determined that he came to Logan County from the Drakes Creek area of Sumner Co. Tn/NC. RECORDS also show that he paid a tax for property on Drakes Creek from 1787 through 1793. His LW&T dated 1816 and proven 1817 in Logan County proves he had a son named Hugh Montgomery. 1850 U.S. Census report of Claiborne Co. Tn. show this Hugh Montgomery as being born in Virginia in 1786. RECORDS show that Alexander Montgomery had a survey completed on 150 acres that straddled Big Moccasin Creek in 1781. RECORDS show that he paid tax on 145 acres of land and personal property from 1782 through 1786 in Washington Co. Va. RECORDS show that he lived in the Precinct of Captain Alexander Barnett. Now, found a deposition dated 1811 for Russell Co. Va. This record is in the Library of Virginia. The deposition is given by John Montgomery Esquire. This John Montgomery tells the court that he came with his father Alexander and his mother Martha to the Clinch Mountain area from North Carolina in 1771, but did not stay due to Indians. He tells that his father returned the next spring and built a cabin and again did not stay. This John tells that he was aware of five men named Alexander Montgomery that at one time lived near his father. He went ahead to say that one of these lived about 9 miles south of where his father had built his cabin.
We know that Alexander and Martha had built their cabin at the headwaters of Little Moccasin Creek.
We know that Big Moccasin Creek runs southwesterly from a point near there and goes through Gate City and later enters the North Fork of Holston River.
We know that William Huston had once built a fort on Big Moccasin Creek and that this Alexander Montgomery land owner lived near this fort.
This Alexander Montgomery paid tax on this land from 1782 through 1786 and then removed to the Cumberland settlements.
This Alexander Montgomery owned 150 acres on Drakes Creek and then removed to Logan Co. KY.
