Maybe my previous post didn’t get through? A lot of misinformation on this site. I’ll just tell the facts: James and Cynthia Gatliff Adkins were in good standing with her family when they took off for Okla in 1906 tho I’m sure their second son Charles, my grandfather, had greatly displeased his uncle Ancil (Cynthia’s younger brother) by showing up drunk on the job at Uncle Ancil’s coal mine in TN. James died the following year, 1907. John Speed, Cynthia’s father, had so far forgiven the young couple that he gave them and their growing brood a house on the Cumberland. The Adkins tribe went to Okla trying to cash in on the possibility of better fortunes than existed in the KY mountains.
