Dear Theresa,

I’ll need more than a few days to look into his lineage, since it’s not on my tree. John Elijah Adkins & Sarah Francis Zachery Adkins are buried http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=27491755 posted photo by Peggy Yarbough, a quick internet search shows that she has been on this search for several years. You should contact her, if you haven’t already, to see what all she has on the family. I do see where she has posted her work at many different websites & a bible is referred to at one. A Family bible reference is promising. I’ll see what I can find referenced to him.

Thanks as always,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

@Kevin – I am researching the lineage of William Adkins and Hannah Rader. If you look in the census for 1850-1880 you will find that he remained in Clay County all those years. His wife passed away in 1868 (I found her death record) and do not find him in the 1890 census so would guess that he passed away in that 10 year span. Would love to compare notes. You can email me at Tammy.L.Smith@Live.com

Hi there!

I’ve been doing quite a bit of research lately on my family ties and keep coming back to the Jacob Harley Earl of Oxford and Mary Blue Cornstalk lineage. What I know that is somewhat confirmed is my grandmother, Georgia Adkins Garnett’s great grandfather(?) is Perry Green Adkins. She did tell me her family came over from England and were farmers in West Virginia(Wayne County and surrounding areas) and I’ve been told about Native American history on her side of the family. Any help would be great, thanks!

Desmond Kendrick was the one who put the original pictures of William Vortimer Adkins III & Mary Ann Hartman online. The Danville Register and Bee did a article about “Oldest Photographs in Pittsylvania County believed to be found” in October 9, 1995. Desmond claims photography was available in Danville as early as 1840, or a year after it was invented by Louis J.M. Daguesse in France ” Kendrick’s aunt, Mamie Reynolds gave him the album. Mrs. Reynolds told Kendrick who the people are in the photographs, but she identified William Kendrick as Owen’s father. The album was given to Mrs. Reynolds by her mother. The trail leads back to Mamie’s great-grandmother, Permelia Adkins.” So if the photo album was owned by Permelia Adkins once it would have to be someone related but i’m skeptical of Desmond saying photography was available in 1840 whoever interviewed him should have gotten some proof. I did look him up on facebook he’s not too hard to find I’m not going to link his info, but if someone wants to try to get some info from him it would help a lot of people.

Mike,

It’s been years, but I hope you may still check here on occasion!

You said “I know that Alexander Montgomery son of Alexander and Martha had signed up for 5 years or the duration of the War. (Captain Reid.)” Can you please let me know how you know that this Alexander was the son of Alexander and Martha? Also, do you know who the younger Alex married? Looking to document these connections.

Thanks!

-Beth

Hello Beth,

I do not dabble in this much anymore, but I might add some info to help you. If you look at message 17, and 18, October 3, 2012, you will find the story of this family with some documentation, including the exact wording on the SAR pension application.

If you read about this family in The Magoffin Historical Society book on the Montgomery family you will find the same story that is at the beginning of this webpage. Draper manuscripts are a primary source of documentation for this period. The University of Kentucky has a copy.

Probably the best documentation are depositions and history of the movement of Alexander and sons with other known historical figures like the Walkers, Porters, Snoddy through Virginia forts to Kentucky.

If you are looking for documentation to join the Society of Boonesborough, you can join through John Montgomery #1523

If you are looking for documentation to join the Sons of the American Revolution you might join through John Montgomery #182692.

If you are interested in documenting this family prior to 1792 you can join the First Families of Kentucky #299.

A William Montgomery, descendant of 4 barons of the Magna Charta, qualifies one for membership in the National Society of the Dames and Barons of the Magna Charta. However , his YDNA Haplogroup is R-M269 and the YDNA haplogroup of Alexander Montgomery of Orange County, North Carolina is I-M253. So Alexander of Orange County, North Carolina is not related to the William Montgomery, descendant of 4 barons of the Magna Charta.

I hope this helps a little. And that Mike Shuman chimes in.

Kay

Dear Debbie,

I’m not sure how this “Tyler Ray Matters” got your email address. I don’t believe that I’ve been hacked. I’ve checked – all comments, allowed & in the spam query, none are from that name. I remember deleting & blocking a few comments a few weeks ago, but I can’t remember whom they were from. I’ve not been monitoring the blog daily as I used to but I do check & dump the spam account monthly.

I have no idea where this person would have gotten your email address, I didn’t see it listed at the site. I can remove it anywhere it’s visible, but as far as I can see, it isn’t listed or in the comments. I apologize for any inconvenience this poster may have caused you, but I’m not sure how I can help. You can flag and/or block any unwanted emails with your personal email account.

I’m sure it will all work out.

Thanks as always,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

Dear Sheila, not sure what is going on or who this fella is, but i didnot leave you any messages on this site. I just read his comments to you and that was really rude. Please be assured that was not from me. I dont know how this is happening. Not sure how he got my e-mail address. Pretty cowardly of him to be sending these offensive messages under someone else’s name, don’t you think? Please let me know if you get anymore messages from my e-mail address. Have a great day….Debbie

Sheila, the messages are in the same email that you replied to me with. An email sent from this site when someone posts if you are following this thread. Go and read all the comments in that email and you will see his. Or at least that is where I see them.

Regarding the probate documents about Temperance Lyon, widow of James Poteat: I believe the James Poteet you are thinking about is James Poteet, b.c. 1745, Baltimore County, son of James and Elizabeth Crabtree Poteet, who was said to have married Jean Patton. James died c. 1825, Buncombe County, NC.
Temperance Lyon married James Poteat, b.c. 1770, in Caswell County, NC, on 11 November, 1801. This is the young man who died in 1805, Caswell County, and his probate proceedings grant support to his widow, Temperance Poteat. (Temperance was the daughter of Robert Lyon and his second wife, Rebecca Unknown.) She married James McClain later in 1806 and they eventually moved to Henry County, TN, where she died in 1841.

Thanks so much, You have helped resolve the math of Nancy Crater/Nancy Runion (Cherokee). In a lot of trees a dead woman kept having babies, Sometimes the two women merged into one, and sometimes the first woman is nameless or doesn’t exist, which causes a problem for babies magically appearing 16 years before he married. I am the Great Great Grandson of Adonijah/ Great Grandson of James Fredrick/ Grandson of George Clifford/ son of James Frank/ I am Charles Michael of Indiana.

Hello. I’m trying to find some information about Essex Capshaw who married an Indian Woman named Elizabeth. We think she was a daughter of Chief Cornstalk. We can trace up to her daughter Sarah Capshaw.

Hi,

My name is Christina I am from the modern day Chickahominy tribe. I have been doing a lot of research on my family lineage. Littleberry is my great-grandfather. John L. Adkins and Elizabeth Bradby were my 4x great grandparents. Elizabeth Bradby was Chickahominy Indian . John L. Adkins was not, but I was able to trace his lineage back to make some surprising finds. I hope this helps answer some questions that people may have posted.
